Heading into the January transfer market, Paul Pogba stands as one of the biggest names who may well be available, with his Manchester United future still unclear.
The 28-year-old midfielder
hasn't yet renewed his contract with the Old Trafford club, despite the fact it
is due to end in June 2022, and with his three-match suspension in the Premier
League set to come into force, United will be required to adjust to life
without him earlier than anticipated.
As of January 1, Pogba will be able to talk to foreign clubs and agree a pre-contract deal, although at the present moment there is still a possibility that he pens an extension with the Premier League club.
"At the moment, everything
is calm, there is no news, ask United," Mino Raiola declared in an
interview with The Times.
Manchester United unlikely to sell in January
In a report published by ESPN
on Thursday, it was stated that United were unlikely to accept any transfer
offers in January, which would ensure they received some kind of compensation
for a player they paid almost 105 million euros for.
In the current compressed
state of the transfer market, it's difficult to see any club making a concrete
offer in January, and this release of news may well indicate the Glazer family
are preparing for such an outcome, making a free transfer look like a club
choice.
In contrast, both The
Athletic and L'Equipe believe Pogba is far more likely to extend his stay in
Manchester, with Cristiano Ronaldo's arrival a key factor in changing the
midfielder's mind, as would be the expected salary which would make him one of
the highest paid players in the English top flight.
Pogba's numbers are good
Manchester United have a
problem in the sense that Pogba has the most assists in the Premier League this
term with seven, but it's difficult to find a game that he has played
exceptionally well in.
Of course, this goes for most
of the team too, but United would undoubtedly be losing a lot of creativity if
Pogba doesn't re-sign, even if it is sometimes difficult to place him
appropriately in the starting XI.
